Apple TV to stream first live sports event filmed on iPhone 17 Pro
This Saturday, May 23, Apple TV will make history by broadcasting a Major League Soccer game filmed entirely on the iPhone 17 Pro. This marks the first occasion where a significant professional sports event will be shot completely using iPhones. The event, a collaboration between Apple TV and MLS, features a match-up between the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC. The game will be streamed live from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, coinciding with the final MLS weekend before the regular season takes a break for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ in North America.
Throughout the match, the iPhone 17 Pro will be used to film live footage, including moments like team warm-ups, player introductions, and unique in-net goal shots, along with the overall stadium atmosphere. Placing cameras across the venue will deliver high-quality video along with fresh perspectives that enhance the viewing experience, all made possible by the iPhone’s compact size.
The integration of iPhone into live sports broadcasts by Apple TV started with a baseball game in September 2025, where the iPhone 17 Pro was used to capture selected moments during a “Friday Night Baseball” game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. This production was notable enough to have an iPhone added to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s permanent collection. The iPhone 17 Pro’s three 48MP Fusion cameras provide the equivalent of eight lenses and include professional video features like Apple Log 2, which will be utilized for this weekend’s broadcast.
Following the positive reception of the baseball broadcast, Apple increased the use of iPhones in other sports events, such as the 2025 MLS Cup, and fully integrated this technology into their regular “Friday Night Baseball” and MLS broadcasts for the 2026 season.
Tune in at 7:30 p.m. PT this Saturday to watch the LA Galaxy take on Houston Dynamo FC exclusively on Apple TV, showcasing the full capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro.
