Makara Sankranthi 2023: Details About Muhuratas
Makar Sankranti (also known as Pongal) is an important spring festival celebrated on January 14 every year. It is a celebration of good harvest and a time to thank the Gods for the bountiful produce. It is one of the few festivals that are based on the solar calendar. The word ‘Sankranti’ means movement of the sun in Sanskrit, and the date of this festival is determined according to the position of the Sun in the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn). The festival is celebrated in most parts of India, with some minor variations. In Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, the festival is called Pongal, while in Karnataka it’s known as Bihu. The festival is celebrated with much gusto in most parts of India, especially in southern states. It is a time when people prepare for the next season and bid goodbye to winter. The celebrations begin with an elaborate puja (prayer) at home where people pray for good health, prosperity, and happiness in the coming year. The first day of Pongal is known as Mattu Pongal and the second day is Kolam Pongal. It is celebrated with much pomp and show by people dressing up in new clothes, visiting temples, and offering prayers to gods. The celebrations are marked by gaiety, merriment, and the exchange of gifts among friends and family members. Pongal is a harvest festival, celebrated in many parts of India. It marks the end of the harvesting season and thanksgiving to the Sun God for providing good rains during this time. It is believed that a good Pongal yields a better harvest in the coming year. The festival is also known as Makara Sankranthi and marks the first day of the four-month-long harvest season. It is celebrated on the day when Sun transits into Capricorn, which falls between January 14th and 16th every year.
