Celebrating the unique bond of Brother and sister: Know more about Bhai Dooj and its significance.

Bhai Dooj (Northern India), Bhau Beej (in Maharashtra & Gujarat) or Bhai Phonta (Bengal) is similar to Raksha Bandhan. It is observed on the second lunar day I,e second day after Diwali.
Bhai Dooj is made of two words– Bhai meaning brother, Dooj meaning second day after new moon.
This day commemorates the sacred relationship shared between a brother and sister. Sisters apply tilak on the foreheads of their brothers and pray for their prosperity and longevity and in return men present gifts to their sisters and take their vow to protect them.
Stories behind Bhai Dooj
There are many folklores and tales from mythology associated with celebration of Bhai Dooj.
To begin with,it is believed after killing the demon Narakashur (Narakasura)Celebrated as Naraka chaturdashi(Diwali),Lord Krishna visited his sister Subadhra,who warmly welcomed him and applied tilak on his forehead.
Another story associated with Bahi Dooj is the story of Yamraj and his sister Yami.The story is that the Lord of Death Yamraj after long await,met his beloved sister on Dwitheya, the second day after the new moon and thus the occasion began to be celebrated as “Yamadwitheya” or “Yamadvitiya” across the country from that day.
