The Indian challenge at the World Weightlifting Championships remained alive but the judges upheld a decision against them when Mirabai Chanu failed to lift her personal best of 90 kg in women’s 48kg. The Manipuri was trailing Jiang Huihua of China by 1kg going into snatch and had to lift 90kg to overhaul the Chinese who had cleared 91kg. But Chanu lifted 87kg (personal best) and the Chinese bettered her effort with 92kg to lead 2-1 after two of the five weight divisions were decided. The Indians now have to win two more golds to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In women’s 69kg, Ritu Malik defeated Japan’s Chihiro Ikeda in a tense battle while Pradeep Singh won gold in men’s 56kg with a world record lift of 209kg. Ravi Kumar won gold in men’s 62kg while Anil Kumar won silver in the same category. In women’s 53kg, Deepak Punia also won gold after defeating China’s Yanmei Xiang. In the women’s 69kg category, Ritu Malik won gold after defeating Japan’s Chihiro Ikeda in a tense battle. In men’s 56kg, Pradeep Singh won gold with a world record lift of 209kg while Ravi Kumar won silver in the same category.
