Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia which is the largest religious monument in the world. It is an awe inspiring UNESCO World Heritage site with its five lotus like towers rising 65 meters into the sky. The temple was built by Suryavarman II, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma of Hindu mythology who are the three principal gods in the Hindu pantheon.
After Angkor was attacked by Cham people modern day Vietnam in 1117, King Jayavarman VII decided that the Hindu gods had failed him. When he built the new capital Angkor Thom nearby, he dedicated it to Buddhism. After which Angkor Wat became a Bhuddhist shrine and many of its carvings and statues of Hindu deities were replaced by Buddhist art.
Ellora Caves, India
Located in Maharashtra state of India, Ellora Caves is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of the largest rock-cut Hindu, Buddhist and Jain temple cave complexes in the world, with artwork dating from the period 600-1000 CE.
The Ellora monuments were built during the Rashtrakuta dynasty which constructed part of the Hindu and Buddhist caves, and the Yadava dynasty which constructed a number of the Jain caves. They not only bear witness to three great religions but illustrate the spirit of tolerance, characteristics of ancient India, which permitted these religions to establish their sanctuaries and their communities in a single place.
Old Bagan, Myanmar
Bagan is an ancient city in the Mandalay region of Myanmar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city used to be the capital of the Bagan Kingdom from 9th to 13th century, the first kingdom that unified the regions that later constituted Myanmar.
Bagan is famous for its historical monuments and houses around 2000 monuments from different periods.
Borobudur, Indonesia
Located in Central Java of Indonesia, Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. It was built during the 8th and 9th centuries AD during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty.
The temple was buried under the volcanic ash till it was discovered in 1815 and was restored with the help of UNESCO in the 70s.
Ayutthaya, Thailand
The island city Ayutthaya in Thailand is one of the most impressive UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ayutthaya temples are famous world wide which were destroyed during the Burmese attack but where restored later.
