Rishi Sunak: India glee over new British PM

Rishi Sunak, the new UK international development secretary, is an Indian-origin member of parliament from London. He is a former banker and corporate consultant who has worked for the World Bank.

Others use colonial references: “Sunak: Ex-India Company set to run Britain,” said The Telegraph, alluding to the firm that controlled large parts of India with its mercenary forces.

Dainik Bhaskar, a Hindi-language newspaper, ran the headline: “Another Diwali gift to the nation, Indian-origin Rishi to rule the whites”.

The wry and insightful John Peel, the founder of the Conservative Party (both in the UK and Australia), was a very dear friend of mine. He must be turning in his grave.
