Kerala Lesbian Couple Reunited By The High Court

Last week, India’s Supreme Court decriminalized gay sex after a decades-long legal battle between activists and LGBTQ+ groups. The move has been hailed as an important step towards equality in a country where members of the community still face stigma and resistance to complete acceptance.

Ms. Noora and Ms. Nasrin are all too familiar with this. The couple says they still face threats of separation from Ms. Noora’s family. In India, same-sex marriages have no legal sanction, though petitions for legalization are being heard in the courts. Ms. Noora’s mother has been on a campaign to find her daughter a man and get her married off.

The High Court of Kerala has reunited Adhila Nasrin and Fatima Noora, two women from Kerala who were sent back to their hometowns by their families after they eloped to Dubai and married.

The court directed the police to ensure that both are reunited and that they are allowed to live as a couple without any hindrance. Akhila Nasrin said that she and her partner Fatima Noora were physically and mentally tortured by their families.

Six days ago, Noora was abducted by her family and sent back to her hometown. Akhila said that she was also mentally tortured by her family because of this she left home and went to a friend’s house.

She then took a flight to Dubai where she met Fatima Noora who had gone there with her parents on a vacation. Fatima Noora said that she was in love with Adhila Nasrin and wanted to marry her but the two families wouldn’t allow it. They both eloped and got married in Dubai.
