Four held with Mephedrone drug worth Rs 59 lakh in Surat city

In a joint operation, the police of Surat city and Gujarat’s Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) arrested the four persons on Tuesday, following which they seized 590 grams of mephedrone worth Rs 59 lakh.

The accused were identified as Jitendra Kumar Gupta, a resident of Rajasthan’s Alwar district, and his three accomplices, who were traveling in an Innova car bearing registration number GA-05-D-7066. The police also seized a Suzuki Alto car bearing registration number GJ-06-E-9235 from the four men. The police recovered 590 grams of mephedrone worth Rs 59 lakh from the accused.

Mephedrone is a psychoactive drug that has similar effects to amphetamines and cocaine, but it is not as addictive. Police said that the drug is used by many youngsters at parties or for recreation.

The police said that the accused were planning to sell the drug in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and other states. They also said that the accused had earlier been involved in similar cases of drug trafficking.

The police identified the accused as Azharuddin Shaikh (27), Mohammad Rizwan (25), Mohammad Tauhid Shaikh (22), and Imroz Shaikh (27), all residents of Surat city.
