Apple introduces new accessibility updates with Apple Intelligence

Apple has unveiled a range of new accessibility features driven by Apple Intelligence, enhancing tools like VoiceOver, Magnifier, Voice Control, and Accessibility Reader. Additionally, the company announced on-device generated subtitles for uncaptioned video content and a feature for Apple Vision Pro users to control power wheelchairs with eye movements. These innovations are expected later this year.

Today, Apple launched the Hikawa Grip & Stand for iPhone, an adaptive MagSafe accessory, available in three bright new colors through the Apple Store online.

Enhancements for VoiceOver and Magnifier

For those who are blind or have low vision, the VoiceOver and Magnifier tools now offer more detailed descriptions of images and surroundings. Using Apple Intelligence, Image Explorer in VoiceOver provides comprehensive image descriptions, including photographs and documents. Updates to Live Recognition enable users to ask questions about their camera viewfinder’s content and receive detailed responses, with the option to follow up with further inquiries.

Magnifier also benefits from Apple Intelligence, offering a high-contrast interface for users with low vision. It allows users to use spoken commands to control the app, such as “zoom in” or “turn on flashlight.”

Improvements to Voice Control

Voice Control has become more intuitive, utilizing natural language to facilitate navigation on iPhone and iPad for users with physical disabilities. This feature allows users to describe on-screen elements using everyday language, enhancing navigation in apps like Apple Maps or Files.

Accessibility Reader’s New Capabilities

The Accessibility Reader now accommodates a wider array of materials, such as scientific articles with complex layouts. It offers on-demand summaries and built-in translation that maintains custom formatting. The feature supports users with various disabilities, from dyslexia to low vision.

Automatically Generated Subtitles

Subtitles for personal videos and other media without existing captions will now be generated automatically, thanks to on-device speech recognition. This feature supports iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro devices, with customizable appearance options.

Power Wheelchair Control with Apple Vision Pro

For users who can’t use joystick controls for power wheelchairs, Apple Vision Pro introduces a new eye-tracking feature to control compatible alternative drive systems. This tool works in diverse lighting conditions and doesn’t require frequent recalibration. Initially, it supports the Tolt and LUCI systems in the U.S., with more options planned.

Pat Dolan of GeoALS expressed his appreciation for this feature, highlighting its potential to enhance independence for wheelchair users. Blair Casey from Team Gleason also praised the advancement, noting its significant impact.

New Hikawa MagSafe Accessory

The new Hikawa Grip & Stand, designed in collaboration with individuals with disabilities, is now globally available. Created by Bailey Hikawa, this adaptive accessory supports various needs related to grip and mobility. It represents a synthesis of accessible design and practical usability, showcasing Apple’s dedication to inclusive technology.

An upcoming session at Apple The Grove in Los Angeles will feature Hikawa, Shane Burcaw, and Alex Barone discussing the role of iPhone in accessible technology.
